Virginia General Assembly Funds VA Beer Distribution Company
-Limited Self Distribution on Tap Soon-
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild (VCBG) Leadership Council announced that the Virginia General Assembly voted today to fund the Virginia Beer Distribution Company (VBDC) within the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) effective immediately. The announcement was made during a joint meeting between the VCBG Leadership Council and the Brewers Association Board of Directors at Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria, Virginia.
“We are excited that our members, regardless of size or business model, will have access to market themselves in a way that supports and grows our independent craft breweries in Virginia,” said Janell Zurschmeide, VCBG Chair (Dirt Farm Brewing).
House Bill 2258 (2023), known as the Beer Industry Limited Distribution (BILD) Act, and HB6001, Item 98 (2023 Special Session I), are the result of two years of concerted effort, including extensive member research and a year-long study commissioned by the 2022 General Assembly, to establish the first beer self-distribution program of its kind in the United States, further propelling Virginia’s independent craft beer industry onto the national stage. VDACS has now been authorized to hire two VBDC staff positions and proceed with forming its Board, licensing system, operating plan, marketing plan, and regulations.
